Connecting with the Creators of our Country
When India became free on 15th August 1947 Jawaharlal Nehru, our first prime minister, declared from the ramparts of Red Fort that 'While the world sleeps, India will awake to Life and Freedom'. As I sit back, read about and observe my country which is 65 years old and the issues it faces right now i wonder whether this is the India the creators of our country wanted.
Our country has made progress as we do have a strong army, a good democratic set up, efficient courts, a good economy, a free media e.t.c. But the success of the country is not determined by the amount of milestones it has achieved but by the amount of its unfulfilled potential, something which, in the case of India, is huge.
I would sincerely like to connect with the fathers of my country in a WeChat group and ask them where have we (as a country) gone wrong, could they have taken better measures to ensure a much more stable India and what steps have to be taken ahead to make India a Superpower in every sense.
Jawaharlal Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi
Some of the matters I would like to seriously discuss and understand from them would be -
1. Why, even after 65 years of independence, and even after Mahatma Gandhi promoting the idea of equality, casteism still exists in our society and how can it be uprooted, just like the roots of a dead tree, from our society
2. Why could Dr Ambedkar and the Constituent Assembly not establish a Lokpal when they formulated the Constitution of India (as our current politicians keep dithering on passing the bill on one pretext or the other)
3. Why even though Pandit Nehru's Birthday is celebrated as Children's Day, all children have not received their basic rights. There are significant amount of them who work in their childhood instead of going to school and are still being exploited.
I would also like to discuss with these gentlemen as to why India - a country of women like Rani of Jhansi, Rani Chenamma, Sarojini Naidu - is yet to change its mentality vis a vis women and their right to live with respect and dignity.
What their opinion and their solutions to our current problems would be I can only guess but one thing is for certain. That the future of our country hinges on the answers of the questions i have raised.
One more thing is for sure, if this conversation really happens I would surely write letters to the entire political dispensation and tell them the contents of our discussion so that they would know where the nation has gone wrong and where do we have to correct our course so that we can indeed become a super power in the years to come.
