Tourist Safety and India - A Long Distance Relationship?

On Sunday, October the 22nd, a young Swiss Couple who were visiting Fatehpur Sikri (a UNESCO World Heritage Site near Agra) were brutally attacked by 5-6 boys after they, allegedly, refused to click pictures with them. The Swiss female received fractures and gash wounds while the Swiss male suffered from a fractured skull, hearing loss and a clot in the brain. Reported by the national papers on Thursday, October the 26th, this event impacted the conscience of many citizens of the country.

Let's try to be Incredible for good reasons!
(Pic Courtesy - Ministry of Tourism)

This incident revealed the pathetic condition of the minds of every Two out of Three Indians involved in the tourism and hospitality industry who look upon tourists (be it foreign or Indian) as means of earning an 'extra' buck or two by either fleecing them, fooling them or by some other unfair means. Such people, neither respect the monuments around which they stand nor do they respect the people who visit them.
Such an attitude displayed by touts, false guides, hooligans etc only serves to spoil the experience of the tourist or traveller who has come down to India to see the monuments or attractions which belong to one of the oldest civilizations in the world.
The notoriety of touts in Agra, for example, has been observed by me (Came across a character who chased me from the door of the train till the time I sat in a shared auto heading to Agra Fort). I have heard worse stories from Fatehpur Sikri, where my friend and Travel Blogger Merwyn was threatened with physical violence when he refused to take the services of a guy masquerading as a guide. Even in this case, it was only when Merwyn dared him to lift a finger did that guy leave him alone.
So, when an Indian can face such a threatening behaviour in his own country what would a foreign backpacker go through is anyone's imagination.
While the police at Fatehpur Sikri have arrested those culprits but it is imperative for them to realise that mass sensitisation programs need to be seriously considered in order to educate people about the value of tourists and how to behave with them. As long as the attitude of people towards the tourists will not change, the country will continue to get bad word of mouth publicity from tourists who visit India.
One should reflect upon this point - What experiences are this couple going to relate to the people and media in Switzerland when they go back?
There was also this other incident (some years ago) of a Swiss Couple (on a cycling tour) being attacked and the female being gang-raped by criminals in feudal-minded Datia (Madhya Pradesh). My point is this, is there any sense in sinking millions of Rupees of taxpayers money in the Incredible India Advertising Campaigns (in the manner in which it is doing currently) while many continue to disrespect tourists with impunity?
A proposal for a Tourism Police has been repeatedly  ignored despite the fact that such an entity is required in a country like India more than anywhere else. In my opinion, the protection of tourists has to be accorded an equally important priority if not the highest priority as compared to the Incredible India campaigns. The sooner the government realises the better it would be for the prestige of the country which keeps taking a hit everytime a tourist is fleeced, robbed or assaulted - physically or sexually.
Another interesting aspect of this entire story was that it was the external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj who first took cognizance of this event and not the (usually loud) tourism minister K Alphons.
In the end, it would be better if we pose this question to ourselves, that in 'the manner in which we are treating our guests, would we ourselves like to visit India if we were non-Indians'? In the answer to this question, we would find the answer to another very important question, and that is,
'IS INDIA A SAFE COUNTRY TO TRAVEL IN'?

Discover Switzerland this Holiday Season

Two years ago I had written a series of articles over the best destinations a family or a couple could go to and Switzerland came on top of the list. It was no mere co-incidence. Some of the many reasons why it pipped destinations like Italy, France, Mauritius e.t.c. were because it is an all-weather destination, it has a superb ambience (thanks to the Swiss Alps), is serene, has the ability to provide you an out of the world experience, security is not an issue here, the people are broad-minded and it makes your holiday look like a fairy tale.

According to me the opulence and grandeur of a destination cannot be measured by the number of articles which have been written over it but by observing whether those articles have been able to encapsulate, to the fullest, the charm of that destination.. And the answer (in the case of Switzerland) is No..

No matter how much I or any other author writes about Switzerland there will always be something new for you to discover there. And it is this aspect which makes visiting Switzerland an out-of-the-world experience.

While in Switzerland a ride in the Glacier Express is always recommended as it takes you through some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the world.

In Switzerland the main places which are recommended to tourists and travelers amongst the many options are Lake Geneva, St Moritz, Mürren, Arosa, Interlaken, Zurich, Zermatt e.t.c. Folks in Switzerland Tourism use the sub-heading 'Get Natural' which aptly explains their country and its incredible natural beauty. Newly-wed couples considering a Switzerland Honeymoon should look no further as Swiss Summers are one of the best times to explore the country and feel the real magic of classical Switzerland

Contrary to the popular perception, Switzerland is not that expensive a place to visit and if you scour the internet you would come across economical packages which wouldn't burn a hole into your pocket. One of the leading travel sites 'Make My Trip' is organising a contest and they are giving away a Free Swiss Trip as a prize. So do participate because if you get lucky you are in for the time of your life !

Switzerland

Top Ten places to visit in the world with your soulmate:-

1. Switzerland

While deciding which destination, according to me, would be the best to visit for a honeymoon I went back and asked myself what is the basic purpose of romance ? They are Love and Intimacy [ Physical and Mental]. While honeymooning a couple gets to understand each other, increase comfortability with each other and enjoy each other's company in a place which is beautiful, serene, innocent and has the ability to move you.

Such places are found only in storybooks which is why I recommend Switzerland, The Home of Heidi. Future can only be based upon truth which is why any ideal honeymoon for me is where I can work out my compatibility or get to know the prefrences of my partner and vice-versa in privacy.

In Switzerland the main places which are recommended for a couple to go amongst the many options are Lake Geneva, St Moritz, Verbier, Mürren, Gstaad, Arosa.. But the main usp of Switzerland is Switzerland itself. Its lush green meadows, the powdery snow, the breathtaking lakes, the hypnotising sceneries, the isolated cottages, the cattle with bells around their necks, the sheperd dogs....... Switzerland has it all !

Switzerland is incomplete without its powder snow and skiing !

Verbier is a resort town which is simple and very much French in nature. It lies at the bottom of an enormous alpine valley surrounded by spectacular ski slopes. Verbier also has cable car access to a huge network of ski trails. During summers Vernier becomes a base town for hikers.

While in Switzerland a ride in the Glacier Express is always recommended as it takes you through some of the most breathtaking sceneries in the world.

The Glacier Express connects the railway stations of the two major mountain resorts of St. Moritz and Zermatt in the Swiss Alps. The trip on the Glacier Express is a 7½ hour railway journey across 291 bridges, through 91 tunnels and across the Oberalp Pass on the highest point at 2,033 m (6,670 ft) in altitude.

Murren is an isolated town which can be reached by cog railway or cable car. Set on a rocky, high-altitude ledge hundreds of feet above the Lauterbrunnen Valley, Mürren has a handful of chalet-style hotels, excellent ski and hiking trails, and sweeping views over the mountains of the Bernese Oberland. It is as picture-perfect a Swiss village as you can find anywhere.

Gstaad

Gstaad is located at the junction of four alpine valleys midway between the Bernese Oberland and the Vaud Alps, Gstaad is a winter capital of the European glitterati. You can't get any more stylish, and the skiing is good, too. Regardless of their price range, all the hotels seem to have cozy bedrooms, blazing fireplaces, and enough schnapps to set the mood.

 Arosa

Arosa is one of the highest (1,800m/5,904 ft.) ski resorts in Switzerland, Arosa is less expensive and less forbiddingly elegant than its nearest competitor, St. Moritz. An excellent place for a romantic getaway during summers, where a series of hiking trails lead to lush forests and small lakes. When you tire of these, cable cars can carry you and your companion to alpine heights and sublime vistas.

The other places you might want to visit while in Switzerland are Mount Rigi, Rousseau Island [Ile Rousseau], Vals Valley, Verbier, Lausanne, Zermatt.......

In the end beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. Every couple has got their own tastes and i am sure some might differ with the positioning of the honeymoon destinations in the ranks. Some couple might have other destinations in mind while some would not want their honeymoon to be destination specific so in the end I leave the final choice of the ideal destination to you. Go where your heart takes you to and have a Happy Comitted Life. Bon Voyage
